NZAVS Annual Membership

NZAVS Annual Membership

Founded in 1978 by Bette Overell, the New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society is an incorporated society that is working for the abolition of vivisection on the grounds that it is scientific fraud.

The cruelty and exploitation of animals by the vivisection industry is self-evident, so our campaign is focused on the scientific invalidity of vivisection and the resulting danger to human health.

Over the past three and a half decades we have held demonstrations, presented petitions at Parliament, submissions to government and regulatory authorities, increased public awareness of vivisection through advertisements and posters. Recently we uncovered our government’s plan to introduce animal testing of legal highs and spearheaded a long successful campaign to stop it.

By joining you enable us to continue that work and you can become a part of it. Members are eligible to join our committee and guide campaigns. We will support and assist in anti-vivisection work members wish to carry out. Members can also access our extensive book and DVD library.

Members receive our newsletter Mobilise! as soon as it is published as well as updates and information on campaigns.

Please include a postal address with the membership payment as contact details are needed for the membership to be official. All mail will be sent to the contact details provided. Also if you would only like electronic versions of Mobilise!, please include your email address.

Please note membership is $25 per year, the price below includes PayPal fees and extra postage to receive complimentary back issues of Mobilise. We will send the last two issues unless requested otherwise.

If you only want to receive your copy of Mobilise electronically please let us know — nzavs@nzavs.org.nz

Book - The Six Foot Rats

Book - The Six Foot Rats

The Six-Foot Rats tells the story of two lab rats who come to the realisation that they are being used to find treatments for humans – not for Six-Foot Rats!

The book aims to introduce children to the important, yet sensitive issue of animal testing in a light and engaging manner. Whilst this topic is a serious and often upsetting one, The Six-Foot Rats instead focuses on the fundamental truth (stressing the FUN), as discovered by the lab rats in the book: animals are not humans and it is strange and bizarre to compare the two.

The Six-Foot Rats has already received positive reviews from Jane Goodall (Ph.D., Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace), Nichola Kriek (Head of Education, SAFE ) and Craig Smith (Author of The Wonkey Donkey and Musician).

Book – A Cat in Hell’s Chance – paperback

Book – A Cat in Hell’s Chance – paperback

The story of the campaign against Hill Grove cat farm written by the campaigners.

A Cat in Hell’s Chance tells the story of a crusade started by a political novice, which gathered momentum over ten years and became a mass movement which, after battles with the Oxfordshire police, many arrests, court appearances and jailings finally shut down Hill Grove cat farm.

This book tells the true story of one of the most effective campaigns against the breeding and sale of animals for experimentation and vivisection. It also traces the development and the coming to consciousness of a retired Queens Nursing Sister who cast off her more respectable life to commit herself utterly to the cause of anti-vivisection. Cynthia O’Neill was tried and arrested on a number of occasions and spent frequent periods in police custody.

A Cat in Hell’s Chance gives us all hope that even the most difficult battles, if they are approached with determination and resolve, can be won. It provides a detailed map of the journey which is ultimately necessary for those who want to counter injustice and make radical changes.

Book – Lethal Laws – paperback

For the past 150 years, chemicals have been tested on animals for the alleged purpose of protecting the public from their dangerous effects. Lethal Laws reveals that using animals as human surrogates is not only unethical, it is bad science. Alix Fano provides a meticulous analysis of the technical and scientific problems that have plagued animal tests for decades, but which have not been forcefully challenged until now. She shows how animal testing has been used as an alibi to allow the continued use of thousands of toxic chemicals.

In a field dominated by male voices, this is a pioneering work by a woman that effectively demonstrates the causal link between animal testing and environmental degradation, and the subsequent deterioration of human health.

Book – Slaughter of the Innocent – paperback

Book – Slaughter of the Innocent – paperback

Hans Ruesch’s three books, Slaughter of the Innocent, Naked Empress and 1000 Doctors (and more) Against Vivisection, published between 1978 and 1989, laid the foundations for the modern anti-vivisection movement, with it’s uncompromising demand for a complete end to vivisection and the fraudulent scientific arguments which underlie it.

“Born of a rare blend of high intelligence, sound but unstuffy scholarship, a strong capacity for pity and empathy, allied to a striking literary skill. Slaughter of the Innocent constitutes the 20th century’s single most powerful indictment of ‘vivisection’ – the experimentation with and upon animals” – Dr Tony Page

“Hans Ruesch’s magnificent book washes away the thin excuses of doctor-apologists for animal testing. Comprehensively and carefully documented, objective, yet emotionally compelling.” – Dr Robert Mendelsohn

Comic - Liberator - graphic novel

Comic - Liberator - graphic novel

Animal cruelty is the most pervasive form of torture in the modern world. The heroes who fight it don’t wear capes, they wear ski-masks.

Whether it’s vicious dog-fighting clubs or senseless lab experiments force-feeding oven cleaners to monkeys, Jeanette Francis and Damon Guerrero have had enough. Using any and all means available to them, Jeanette and Damon not only rescue the animals but also avenge them – delivering harsh retribution to the animals’ captors and tormentors.

“Liberator is a comic with a purpose, a voice, and a platform. It also happens to be incredibly well written and paced. It’s well worth your money, and some of the profits go to an incredible cause.” – Bloody Disgusting

A hard-edged vigilante series about young heroes who avenge the torture of animals, created by writer and real-life dog rescuer Matt Miner (Occupy Comics) with art by Javier Sanchez Aranda (Star Trek: The Next Generation). Cover by Tim Seeley (Revival, Hack/Slash).

This book collects Liberator issues 1-4 into a single volume for the first time. It also includes 40 pages of brand-new, previously unreleased comics taking place in the Liberator world.

Comic - Liberator: Salvation of Innocents #1 and #2

Hardcore punk legends Earth Crisis join forces with Liberator for this unique comics & music collaboration, telling the story of a young janitor in an animal testing lab who stumbles on a dark conspiracy and is inspired to rescue the animals.

When Sarah Mann takes a crappy custodial job at a cosmetics lab, she discovers cold-blooded scientist Dr. Elena Reznik’s secret facility where illegal vivisections are performed on live, conscious animals. Inspired by the stories of Jeanette and Damon’s animal liberations, Sarah pulls on her own mask and sets out to rescue the tortured animals.

From Dusk 'til Dawn - paperback book

First published in 2007 and with an impressive 672 pages and 140 photographs this book is one that can make you both laugh and cry as well as feel inspired.

From the heart breaking descriptions of the condition of Britches, the baby monkey on the cover, when he was found and rescued from a vivisection lab to the stories of incidences in the preparations of successful raids on kennels that housed beagles destined for certain death this is an essential and entertaining read.

Keith Mann is a dedicated anti-vivisectionist that has participated in all manner of activism from a young age. From standing outside the storefronts of companies that carry out vivisection distributing leaflets to serving time for liberating mice from a lab testing botox on them Mann is dedicated to the cause of ending vivisection.

This though is more than his story, it is the story of a movement that had it’s foundation in the Victorian era and continues today. It is a story that opens eyes and gives hope, it is a story that needed to be told and it is a story that we hope you will hear.

Only available for New Zealand purchasers for NZ$42 including postage and PayPal fees - overseas orders are best placed directly from Keith Mann. If you prefer to not use PayPal please contact us directly.

DVD - Maximum Tolerated Dose

DVD - Maximum Tolerated Dose

Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD): An animal/human experiment to find the highest dose of a chemical that, when administered to a group of test subjects in a clinical trial, does not result in a fatality due to short-term toxicity. This dose is then used for longer-term safety studies of the same species, lasting anywhere from two years to a lifetime. The MTD test is controversial, however, in part because of difficulties in extrapolating findings to more realistic doses, and in extrapolating results from animals to humans.

Maximum Tolerated Dose is the first feature-length documentary by Decipher Films. Equal parts found-footage mash-up, verité investigation, and artful meditation, the film charts the lives of both humans and non-humans who have experienced animal testing first-hand, with hauntingly honest testimony of scientists and lab technicians whose ethics demanded they choose a different path, as well as the simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking stories of animals who have seen both sides of the cage. MTD aims to re-ignite the debate about animal testing by bringing these rarely-heard perspectives to the fore.

Directed by Karol Orzechowski
Edited by Karol Orzechowski & Jonathan Eagan
Produced by Jonathan Hodgson, Jennifer Bundock & Karol Orzechowski
Additional Filming by Jo-Anne McArthur & Guna Subramaniam
With Selected Archival Footage from The BUAV & Igualdad Animal
Music by Wyrd Visions and Bryan W. Bray

DVD - Behind the Mask

DVD - Behind the Mask

From the back cover of the DVD:

"The Animal Liberation Front, comprised of clandestine animal activists, is now labelled the number one domestic terrorist threat by the FBI.

Director Shannon Keith goes BEHIND THE MASK and captures the hearts and souls of men and women who unveil their individual struggles for Animal Liberation.

Who are these “animal liberationists” and why do they believe that breaking the law is the best way to help animals? What inspires them to challenge the status quo, fight against all odds, and endure public reproach?

Behind the Mask exposes never-before-seen footage that reveals the extent to which these individuals will go to save the lives of animals.

People of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the globe, tell their tales of liberation, incarceration, sacrifice and determination, while exclusive underground footage reveals heart-thumping action sure to leave you wondering, who are these people…"

The documentary includes footage from inside laboratories sourced from the ALF and undercover activists and has in-depth discussions and interviews covering the fallacies of vivisection and how it motivated ALF actions.
