In NZ, 141 different institutes could use animals for research, testing and teaching in 2022.

This can be broken down into:

• Institutions with a code of ethical conduct approved by the Director-General of the Ministry For Primary Industries: 22*
• Institutes engaging in research, testing and teaching involving animals that had the arrangement to use another institution’s code of ethical conduct and animal ethics committee rather than forming their own: 119

A reminder that the individual schools in NZ that use animals for science are tallied as one institute that uses animals for science - if they were included individually the total would go from 100+ to thousands.

*The MPI report states that 24 institutes had a code of ethical conduct. However, during 2022 two institutes changed from having their own code to using the code of another institute which reduces this total down to 22.
