Adopt Rats

Apply to adopt rats used or bred for science - Auckland only.

Thanks to our collaborative work with the University of Auckland, we are able to rehome rats who have been used or bred for science, on an ongoing basis in the Auckland region!

If you don’t live in Auckland but want to adopt rats, you sign up for our Nationwide Animal Rehoming Waitlist to adopt animals used or bred for science in the future.

Key details about the rats available for adoption:

  • Gender: Both female and male rats are available.
  • Breeds: The rats we rehome are either Sprague Dawley or Wistar rats, known for their friendly nature and distinctive albino appearance with white fur and red eyes.
  • Health: All rats will be desexed and haven’t been used in any invasive procedures, so they can live happy, normal rat lives in their new homes.
  • Adoption Process: Once/if your application is approved, the rats undergo desexing and recovery before being ready to join your family, usually within a few weeks.
  • Group Adoption: Rats will be rehomed in pairs or more to ensure they have companionship and thrive in their new environment.
  • Cost: See a breakdown of the adoption fees below.

Adoption fee structure:

  • Base Fee: $40 per rat for the first two rats.
  • Discount for Additional Rats: $30 for each additional rat beyond the first two.
  • Maximum Cap: A maximum cap of $150 for five or more rats.
