Ban the Forced Swim Test NZ — Campaign Update

An update on our campaign against the cruel and invalid Forced Swim Test.

The past few months have involved a lot of planning and preparing for the ramping up of our Forced Swim Test campaign!

Our petition to ban the Forced Swim Test in NZ, which was over 25,000 signatures strong is now with the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee. This committee is made up of a group of MPs who will discuss the fate of our petition.

We have written and submitted a formal submission that summarises our strong ethical and scientific arguments against the use of this cruel animal test. You can read this here.

We have also been invited to give an oral submission on our petition at Parliament on the 20^th of February 2020. Representatives from NZAVS, SAFE and PETA will be presenting to MPs and trying our hardest to convince decision-makers to ban the Forced Swim Test.

We are busy doing a lot of other work towards ending this cruel animal test including further actions to encourage Victoria University to ban the Forced Swim Test. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for future updates.

Day 1 - Otago Exposed

Baby rats were force fed alcohol in a cruel experiment at Otago Uni.

Day 2 - Otago Exposed

Rats brains were damaged and pierced with electrodes.

Day 3 - Otago Exposed

Living bees were sliced open and electrocuted.

Day 4 - Otago Exposed

Rats were subject to loud noises and electrocuted.

Day 5 - Otago Exposed

Guinea pigs were forced to swim in the notorious Morris water maze test.

Mother rats were given injections to try and hinder the brain development of their babies, who were then experimented on.

Young mice were forced to experience chronic stress for two weeks.

Rabbits had holes drilled into their jaws.

Guinea pigs had their heads drilled into and were given hypothermia.

Day 10 - Otago Exposed

Rats had their legs surgically damaged and were forced to walk on a rotating drum.

Day 11 - Otago Exposed

Sheep had around 30% of their blood drained from their bodies.
