Political Questionnaire 2020

Political Questionnaire 2020

We've been busy sending out our very own questionnaire to the main political parties and their candidates to find out how they feel about animal experimentation.

The questionnaire to political parties

This questionnaire was sent to the following political parties:

  • ACT New Zealand
  • Māori Party
  • New Zealand First Party
  • The Opportunities Party (TOP)
  • The Green Party of Aotearoa/New Zealand
  • The New Zealand National Party
  • New Zealand Labour Party
  • Sustainable New Zealand Party
  • NZ Outdoors Party

Each of these political parties was invited to fill in our questionnaire several times. Note: The above is not a comprehensive list of all of the political parties in NZ.

This questionnaire included the following questions:

  1. Does your party have a policy on the use of animals for research, testing and teaching purposes? If so, can we please have a copy of this?
  2. Does your party support a ban on the Forced Swim Test in NZ? Find out more about this test here.
  3. Does your party support a ban on the importation and sale of cosmetics that have been tested on animals?
  4. Does your party support the use of non-animal-based scientific methods being mandatory, where they exist & are validated?
  5. Does your party support the prioritisation of funding for new technologies that do not use animals?
  6. Does your party support increased openness of the use of animals in science? For example, the mandatory filming of manipulations for research, testing and teaching purposes that involve animals?
  7. Does your party support reform of the regulatory oversight of the use of animals in science? In particular, does your party support establishing an animal welfare body independent of MPI to oversee the use of animals in New Zealand?

The questionnaire to candidates

This questionnaire was sent to the candidates of the same political parties listed above.

Some political parties are still finalising their candidates which has made it difficult to create a comprehensive list of people to contact. We have been checking for new candidates regularly and inviting them to fill in our questionnaire.

New candidates will be added as we are made aware of them. As of 22nd September 2020, 371 candidates have been invited to fill in our questionnaire.

This questionnaire included the following questions:

  1. Every year in NZ, approximately 300,000 animals are used for research, testing and teaching purposes. Many of these cases will involve animal experimentation. Is this an issue you personally care about?
  2. Is ending animal experimentation and/or replacing the use of animals for research, testing or teaching purposes something that you would advocate for behind the scenes and do what you can ensure that your party is taking action on this matter?
  3. Could you provide a quote on your stance on animal experimentation/animal testing that we could share with our thousands of supporters?
  4. Do you have any further comments?

Where we were unable to access the email address of candidates, we sent a message to the political party they represent asking that our email be forwarded on to them.

We tried to send all candidates at least one reminder email.
